I turned to the practice of Yoga to find the composure required to balance the challenges of working with young people as an English teacher and a single mother of one fabulous but now grown up son. Its benefits inspired me to complete my 200 hour teacher trainer qualification at Camyoga and to specialise under Charlotta Martinus, founder of the UK’s only accredited Teen Yoga and Mindfulnesscourse devised alongside neuroscientists and psychologists from leading universities such as Harvard and Leeds. I have a background in teaching and learning pedagogy as a Coach and PGCE Specialist Conference Tutor at the University of Huddersfield. I am also an associate member of the Teen Yoga Foundation, which had its first conference presenting the scientific research on the benefits of Yoga in education in July, 2015 where I was also a panel guest speaker. As a Yoga Coach, registered with Hull City Council, I am fully insured, DBS checked and Emergency First Aid and Youth Mental Health First Aid qualified. Further to my Yoga work in schools, I am a Mind with Heart educator for an international charity dedicated to developing pupil well-being, character, emotional intelligence and resilience through Mindfulness as well as a plenary speakerfor MHFA (Mental Health First Aid) and MHFA for Youth. For the next 30 months I am training for a post-graduate diploma in Yoga Therapy(BCYT / CNHC accredited) to help individuals with specific health problems.
ABOUT YO YOGA CLASSES
YO YOGA SOUL CAN OFFER CLASSES PRIOR AND FOLLOWING THE SCHOOL OR COLLEGE DAY, DURING LUNCHTIME, AS A WORKSHOP, AS PART OF PE/PSHE, IN THE LEAD UP TO EXAMINATION PERIOD, AND ON HEALTH AND WELL-BEING DAYS.
The new OFSTED common inspection framework specifically states to gain OUTSTANDING schools must enable pupils to ‘make informed choices about healthy eating, fitness and their emotional and mental well-being.’ Mindfulness based Yoga classes support students in staying physically healthy as well as allowing them to explore and reflect on life purpose, cause and effect, resilience, obstacles, relationships, feelings and emotions.
Yo Yoga Soul can also offer classes, workshops and well-being events for your staff. Yoga has been proven to reduce teacher absence(Gabriel at al, 2008), increase greater resilience to stress (Deible et al, 2014), lessen anxiety as well as improve relations and co-operation between colleagues (Schmalzl, 2015).

Recent research conducted by the children’s counselling charity Place2Be revealed that almost 90 per cent of school staff have had to provide support for pupils with mental health problems in the past two years. Some estimates claim that as many as three children in any class will be affected by such issues and the Young Minds charity reports that the number of young people diagnosed with depression at age 15 and 16 has almost doubled since the 1980s.
Mindful Yoga reduces stress and anxiety, increases emotional awareness and in doing so, can help teenagers and children to be more sensitive to those around them; they make better decisions, their behaviour as well as their academic achievement improves as well their ability to sleep. Young people need 8 to 10 hours sleep to function at their best.
